Hypertension

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition where the blood pressure in the arteries remains persistently elevated. Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it throughout the body. When this pressure is consistently higher than normal, it can cause various health issues.

Blood pressure is typically measured using two numbers:

  • Systolic Pressure: The higher number, representing the pressure when the heart beats and pumps blood.

  • Diastolic Pressure: The lower number, representing the pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.

For instance, a blood pressure reading of 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) indicates a systolic pressure of 120 and a diastolic pressure of 80.

Symptoms of Hypertension

Hypertension is often referred to as a "silent killer" because it typically does not show noticeable symptoms in its early stages. However, as the condition progresses or reaches a severe stage, symptoms may manifest. Common symptoms of hypertension can include:

  1. Headaches: Frequent and persistent headaches, particularly at the back of the head.

  2. Fatigue or Confusion: Feeling unusually tired or experiencing difficulty in concentrating.

  3. Vision Problems: Blurred or impaired vision.

  4. Chest Pain or Palpitations: Chest discomfort or irregular heartbeat may occur in severe cases.

  5. Difficulty Breathing: Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing during physical activities.

  6. Blood in Urine: This can be a sign of kidney damage due to high blood pressure.

It's important to note that these symptoms are not exclusive to hypertension and can be associated with various other health conditions. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and consultation with a healthcare professional are crucial for an accurate diagnosis.
