Sinus Infections

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. The sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones surrounding the nose and eyes. When these sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, or fungi, leading to an infection.

Types of Sinus Infections

  1. Acute Sinusitis: This type typically lasts up to four weeks and is often caused by a bacterial infection following a cold, allergic reaction, or irritants.

  2. Subacute Sinusitis: This type lasts between four to twelve weeks, often resulting from a bacterial infection that persists longer than in acute sinusitis.

  3. Chronic Sinusitis: If symptoms persist for more than twelve weeks, it's categorized as chronic sinusitis. It can be caused by an infection, growths (nasal polyps), or a deviated septum.

Symptoms of Sinus Infections

Sinus infections can manifest a variety of symptoms, including:

  1. Nasal Congestion: Difficulty breathing through the nose due to blocked sinuses.

  2. Facial Pain or Pressure: Pain or pressure felt in the forehead, around the eyes, nose, and cheeks.

  3. Runny or Stuffy Nose: Discharge of mucus from the nose or a feeling of fullness and congestion in the nasal passages.

  4. Coughing and Sore Throat: Irritation and inflammation can cause a persistent cough or a scratchy, sore throat.

  5. Headaches: Frequent headaches, often exacerbated by sinus pressure and congestion.

  6. Fatigue: Feeling tired, lethargic, or experiencing a lack of energy.

  7. Fever: In some cases, a sinus infection may cause a low-grade fever.

  8. Reduced Sense of Taste and Smell: Sinus congestion can diminish the ability to taste and smell.
